SWS Computer Systems with Cisco DNA at darmstadtium
The darmstadtium has an extremely robust platform consisting of 42 powerful switch components with 1,800 ports, which provide broadband network services for up to 3,000 end devices across all 18,000 square meters of the convention center.
PyCon & PyData 2025
In mid-April 2025, one of Europe's largest user conferences on the Python programming language, PyCon & PyData, took place at the darmstadtium. During the three-day hybrid event, the science and congress center once again more than proved its capabilities and performance in the IT sector. With 1,500 participants on site and over 600 online participants, the conference ran smoothly thanks to the powerful network.
Important key figures for IT experts include the more than 220,000 onboardings of up to 1,800 end devices per day into the darmstadtium's Wi-Fi network. Onboarding refers to the registration of a device on the network, which often leads to problems and loss of speed when large numbers of devices are concentrated in a small area.
This was avoided thanks to the congress center's sophisticated network infrastructure with over 100 interconnected and communicating access points installed throughout the building. During the conference, the enthusiastic “Pythonistas” had access to a stable and high-performance network at all times.

Digital and Innovation Day 2020
The darmstadtium was the exclusive location and livestream partner for the fifth Digital and Innovation Day, the annual event on digital transformation in the events industry. Under the motto “Hybrid events – the best of both worlds,” the German Convention Bureau invited participants to a virtual exchange on the implementation of digital and hybrid event formats on November 26, 2020. The event was streamed from our ferrum conference room. In virtual discussion rounds, two of our employees shed light on the technical requirements of hybrid events.
DRUPAL 2018
An event such as DrupalEurope 2018 places the highest demands on information and telecommunications technology. More than a thousand users per session day made intensive use of the darmstadtium's powerful IT infrastructure. More than 1TB of data was used via Wi-Fi, while wired devices transferred 1.7TB of data and the sessions were simultaneously streamed live via video.
Wi-Fi is considered the heart of user conferences, as it enables collaboration on a joint project.
We had more than a thousand clients every session day on wifi. Somewhat less than half of those devices were Apple devices according to network stats. Roughly 10% of all devices used the 802.11ac protocol while 25% used 802.11n on 2.4Ghz and 75% used 802.11n on 5Ghz. 1TB of data was transmitted over wifi on the session days, while our wired devices doing session streaming also transferred another 1.7TB of data.
International award for the IT systems at the darmstadtium
The darmstadtium received the first INCON Digital Infrastructure Award in 2014 for its first-class digital infrastructure and continuous development, and in 2019 it once again prevailed against renowned international competition. Continuous investments are made in response to the rapidly changing environment. Customer wishes are at the center of attention, and the focus of action is determined by the current and future requirements of event organizers.
