Sustainability at the darmstadtium has always been approached and implemented holistically. This focus has made the science and congress center a pioneer in this future-oriented topic for 18 years.
At the darmstadtium, sustainability is given special attention along the entire value chain and within all three pillars: economic, environmental and social responsibility. The EMASplus certificate—one of the world’s most demanding sustainability management systems—serves as a guiding principle and benchmark in this regard.

Sustainability is a key focus from the very beginning—already during the planning and construction phase. Working closely with the highly specialised departments at TU Darmstadt led to the first DGNB certification ever awarded to a congress center.

Since its opening on December 6, 2007, the darmstadtium has been a reliable partner for events. Together with its partner venue Centralstation and five additional venues in Darmstadt, it forms a strong network of locations hosting more than 1,100 events per year.
What makes this network special is not only the formal cooperation between the venues, but above all the it-connection that creates a powerful shared infrastructure. This gives customers and guests ideal conditions for their events across the entire network.
18 years young
The darmstadtium impresses customers and guests with its timeless, futuristic architecture. The goal of the architects Talik Chalabi and Paul Schröder to create a building that feels “ever new” has undoubtedly been achieved.
Beyond the building’s futuristic architecture, darmstadtium’s forward-looking spirit is also reflected in its corporate structure.
The special partnership between the City of Science Darmstadt and the Technical University was unique across Germany in 2000. University President Prof. Dr. Johann Wörner and Lord Mayor Peter Benz were the key figures behind this bold decision.
