Positive results in 2018 – and confident outlook with early renewal of management’s contract

Darmstadt, December 2018 – The 10th anniversary year of Darmstadt’s science and congress centre is now over and the team can look back on a successful year. The supervisory board is also pleased and emphasises its trust in the management with an early renewal of its contract.

10 years of darmstadtium – that meant: 10 years of success, 10 years of trust and 10 years of satisfied customers and guests. These requirements were met in the 10th anniversary year too.

Review of 2018

The initial results for the year 2018 are positive and thus correspond with the results from recent years: increasing revenues with less use. More than 5.6 million euros revenue was achieved with around 3 percent growth compared to last year. Visitor numbers were consistent but the number of events in 2018 was lower than the previous year by around 20 percent; the size and length of many of the events were greater however, meaning that total revenue could be increased.

Noteworthy in 2018 were, for example, large-scale events like the Curious Future Insights Conference, the Autodesk University, Jugend forscht, Drupal Europe and the Sales Management Congress, but also well-known conference events like hobit, konaktiva and the HiFi-Tage. A special highlight this year was the international symposium ‘Nonviolence is the way’ with the Dalai Lama as well as the Nobel Peace Prize winners Rebecca Johnson and Lech Wałęsa.

A highlight of a different kind are the many new residents on the darmstadtium roof terrace. Three bee colonies have been living on the roof since May 2018 and are looked after by a local beekeeper. In 2018 he was able to harvest around 65 kg of honey – and also teach the employees at darmstadtium lots about bees, drones and honey.

Evidence of trust: supervisory board renews contract early

The supervisory board, which consists of representatives of the Technische Universität Darmstadt and the Wissenschaftsstadt Darmstadt, is also pleased about the further positive development of Darmstadt’s science and congress centre. “darmstadtium was able to exceed its own records of success in its 10th anniversary year. The team around Lars Wöhler is doing fantastic work and the supervisory board has great trust in his work. Therefore we are especially delighted that the contract of managing director Lars Wöhler – who has already served for eight years – has been renewed early for a further six years,” said supervisory board chairman and Darmstadt mayor Jochen Partsch. “We value working with him greatly and it seems very positive to us that this consistency and continuity will now continue till 2024.”

The customers and guests at darmstadtium are also content and praise not only the spaciousness, functionality and professional support and care but are also persuaded by the technical offering.

"Very few conference centres deliver on WiFi availability for number of clients or speed. Not once in the week, even during keynotes, did I experience problems. Fantastic service, that's not just the WiFi either. Highly recommend your conference centre as a venue."

Conference technology for the future in the ‘City of the Future’

IT expertise with unique information technology systems that constantly evolve is an important selling-point for darmstadtium and one of the reasons why many customers, including from the IT industry, enjoy coming back again and again. That’s why in 2018 congresses such as Digitalstadt-Arena, DrupalEurope, RFID & Wireless IoT Tomorrow, the Breitbandfachtagung and many other IT highlights took place here.

The surroundings are ideal for IT conferences – Darmstadt is not only a digital city but also (once again) City of the Future (see cities ranking on WirtschaftsWoche, Immobilienscout24 and IW Consult). And with good reason: Darmstadt is already equipped today with the most modern IT infrastructure and won the competition based on its spirit of innovation and research.

darmstadtium is forging a trail as a pioneer of the megatrend of connectivity in the events sector, with constant evolution like the further expansion of the WLAN standard wave2, the virtualisation of servers and the current complete redesign of the network structure, in which half a million has been invested. The redesign is being managed in cooperation with Cisco Systems with the aim of developing a more reactive and agile network – darmstadtium is one of the first customers to use ‘Cisco DNA’ live and is serving Cisco as a reference project.

Outlook on a demanding 2019

Alongside a positive review of 2018, we can also look forward to diverse events in 2019. Large congresses like the Deutscher Verwaltungsgerichtstag, the academic conference Eurocrypt and the DG PARO Jahrestagung are expected and well-known events like hobit, konaktiva, Autodesk University and HiFi-Tage are again inviting many visitors to the modern congress centre.
