The city ranking, which is produced annually by the WirtschaftsWoche magazine in partnership with Immobilienscout24 and IW Consult, evaluates 71 independent German cities with a population of more than 100,000. Rankings are produced in three areas: Level, Dynamism and Future. A wide range of factors are taken into consideration, including standard of living, the employment market, research performance and innovation – and, of course, digitalisation.
Especially in this last area Darmstadt could perform particularly strongly. Not only is the city known as a "City of Science", it has also been able to call itself a "Digital City" for a year now. As a result, Darmstadt took first place in the "City of the Future" ranking once again this year.
Well connected in the Digital City of Darmstadt
In 2017, the "City of Science" Darmstadt won the "Digital City" competition organised by the Bitkom IT industry association in cooperation with the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (Deutscher Städte- und Gemeindebund) and with the support of many Darmstadt institutions and companies, as well as the darmstadtium itself. And for good reason: Darmstadt is already equipped with state-of-the-art IT infrastructure and benefits from a phenomenal innovation capability and pioneering spirit. This is also the basis for the city’s success in the “City of the Future” ranking.
This constantly developing IT expertise and infrastructure is also an important USP for the darmstadtium, which is located right in the heart of the city, and is only one of the reasons why so many customers, including many from the IT industry, love to come back here again and again. Over the last few weeks alone, conferences such as the Digitalstadt-Arena, the DrupalEurope Conference, the RFID & Wireless IoT Tomorrow, the Breitbandfachtagung and many other IT highlights have been held here.
darmstadtium invests half a million in digital infrastructure
In 2014, in recognition of its first-class digital infrastructure, the darmstadtium became the first congress centre in the world to receive the international INCON Digital Infrastructure Award. The venue is pursuing this course as a pioneer in the megatrend of connectivity in the event industry, and is constantly introducing new developments, such as the further upgrading of the wave2 Wi-Fi standard, the virtualisation of the server and the ongoing redesign of the network structure. The redesign is being carried out in cooperation with Cisco Systems, and the aim is to build an even more agile network with a greater response capacity. The darmstadtium is one of the first clients to introduce the "Cisco DNA" live, and therefore also serves as a reference project for Cisco.
The darmstadtium team is always looking to provide their customers with improved user performance and excellent service, always at the highest possible level of security – after all, the future is meeting here!
