Green meetings at the darmstadtium

  • The darmstadtium is the venue where old meets new – and where eye-catching architecture meets resource-saving sustainability. Overall, through its extensive use of geothermal, biomass and solar energy, the darmstadtium meets virtually all its energy requirements using renewable energies.
  • Firstly, heating: the darmstadtium is heated primarily using its internal heat sources. The biomass boiler is only used under exceptional circumstances – e.g. during extremely cold weather. Locally-sourced woodchips are used as the fuel, which reduces unnecessary and damaging CO2 emissions produced by transporting fuel.
  • The roof of the darmstadtium is fitted with over 400 solar modules for generating electricity. Each module in the photovoltaic unit generates 180 Watts of electricity – approx. 70,000 kilowatt hours per year! And to ensure the building remains cool in summer, the facades are made from special heat-reflecting glass.
  • The Calla, a funnel-shaped flower made from glass and steel in the foyer of the congress centre saves resources in two elegant ways – it collects rain water and sucks in air. Heat is recovered from the outgoing air and incoming air is cooled by the evaporation of the collected rainwater, which is also used for the darmstadtium's sanitation facilities. Sustainability par excellence!
