The City of Darmstadt

Darmstadt styles itself as a modern congress venue with a vibrant cultural scene: you will find Europe's most modern theatre in the City of Science, alongside the architecture of Hundertwasser and the pre-eminent examples of early twentieth century Jugendstil. Darmstadt, City of Science, numbers some 140, 000 inhabitants and is the economic and cultural centre of the southern Rhine-Main region. Darmstadt is one of the most important technological bases in Germany. Its renowned Technical University is the first self-governing University of Applied Sciences in the Federal Republic of Germany. World-famous research institutions as well as large companies such as Merck KGaA, Deutsche Telekom AG, GSI, Software AG, ESA, EUMETSAT, Wella etc. have their centres in Darmstadt.

A wide variety of attractions, leisure facilities and parks invite the visitor to relax and recuperate. The artists' colony at the Mathildenhöhe is reckoned to be the most important Jugendstil centre in Germany. 8 theatres, 18 museums, as well as a large number of libraries, cinemas and galleries offer an extensive, metropolitan cultural scene. And shopping in the pedestrian precinct of the city centre is just a few steps away from the darmstadtium wissenschaft | kongresse (science | congresses).

Darmstadt sets great store by its hospitality.
There are restaurants here offering haute cuisine, as well as traditional establishments which are typical of the region. One thing is certain: in Darmstadt there is a lot for you and your guests to discover.

What is more, Darmstadt is the gateway to the attractive Odenwald and the picturesque Bergstraße regions. The city and its surrounding area thus both offer many appealing things to see, cultural experiences and leisure opportunities.

Our additional attractions range from the fossil horse (the world natural heritage site, the Messel Fossil Pit) to Frankenstein (Burg Frankenstein, Mary Shelley) to the Venus display (ESA/ESOC) or the sophisticated range of variety theatres. Particularly important for our international visitors to know is that a visit to Heidelberg or the Rheingau region is just a short hop from Darmstadt.
