Further attractions can be found in the surrounding area. In the summer numerous lakes invite for swimming and bathing. Another attraction are the zoos and animal parks in the Rhein-Main-Region around Darmstadt. Not more than an hour away, the cities Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Mainz, Heidelberg or Mannheim invite you for a short visit.

Messel Pit
In 1995 Messel Pit was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It documents the history of earth's development 57 to 36 million years ago, when, after the extinction of the dinosaurs, the flora and fauna of the earth changed dramatically. Messel pit was habitat of the primitive horse. With 10,000 fossils found so far Messel is the world's most productive fossil repository and offers an enormous biodiversity and quality of fossil records. See for yourself a real fossil in its natural surroundings.
